Phone System Repair: Fix It or Replace It?

Your phone system is down, and here's what most repair companies won't say: repairing a discontinued PBX usually costs about as much as replacing it. We'll tell you that up front, give you a straight diagnosis, and if replacement is the honest answer, your new system arrives pre-programmed with your numbers intact. Calls are usually flowing again within days.

The math nobody tells you

Parts are drying up

Replacement boards and handsets for discontinued systems come from a shrinking secondhand market. Every year the parts get scarcer and the prices go up, and the next failure is already scheduled.

So are the technicians

The people who know how to service a 2009 PBX are retiring faster than new ones are learning. A service call, if you can book one, bills accordingly.

Replacement costs about the same

A fully managed cloud system starts at $14.99/user/month with no hardware closet to maintain. One repair bill on old infrastructure often equals the switch. That's the whole calculation.

Is your brand even repairable?

We take the time to get your auto attendants, call routing, and greetings right, so your callers have a great experience from day one.

Mitel

Filed Chapter 11 in March 2025; restructured and exited. The company survives, but legacy on-premises lines are not where its future is. Source

Avaya

Chapter 11 twice in six years (2017 and 2023). Support for older systems narrows with every restructuring.

Panasonic

Exited the business phone business entirely. No new hardware since January 2023, and no manufacturer support path. Source

Nortel

Bankrupt in 2009. Any Nortel system still running has been unsupported for over fifteen years.

Switching from a traditional phone system to VoIP has been incredibly helpful for our business. It’s more efficient, easier to manage, and much more customizable. Chris and his team made the transition seamless.

Soundcurve is by far the best choice for IP phone service. I was tricky and called "support" before calling "sales." Support answered right away from a US location. They are so helpful and courteous. The transition was seamless and support answers quickly every time I have a silly little question. They are now the telecommunications division of MY company! That's how they make me feel, part of my team. Highly recommended.

We absolutely love Soundcurve. We switched to their services after a TERRIBLE experience with a large corporate competitor. We love Soundcurve's personalized service; we have 1-2 dedicated representatives that handle it all, and always check in to see how we're doing. I would recommend their company to ANYONE!

I use their telephone service for our accounting firm. Their service is actually a priced better than your regular phone company. They also have a great customer support, which, none of those big companies can match. Ira will ensured you are taken cared of!

One of the most responsive, friendly, and effective communications vendors we have ever worked with. They got us up and running quickly, with great customer service and response time. Service continues to be impressive, even in this time of increased activity for IT providers. And the price is more than fair for the quality of the solutions. Hope to make use of more of the SoundCurve platform in the future, since I know they have lots of services we have not even explored yet.

Easy and quick set up that was simple enough for anyone to understand. We love our new phones and how easy they are to use. The professional recorded greeting they offer was exactly what we wanted and sounds great! Everyone on the team was so responsive, friendly and helpful.

Soundcurve has been awesome for us. We've been with them for almost a year now. Customer service is always super-responsive and friendly. We've saved a lot of money moving from a landline to voip. It all works just great.

We are so happy with this phone service provider! Our office is stocked with high-tech, user friendly new phones that really improve our working conditions. Best customer service and quick and easy set up!

I was looking to get a voip for my new office and Ira was really helpful and answered all my questions i even got a free phone with my service. I am pleased. The line is great no problems at all

I have to admit I was scared to convert to VOIP but Chris, Ira, and Jenny made my on-boarding so easy and pain free. Anytime I have needed to add an extra line (3 lines by the way) they all have all responded in a timely manner and got the lines going lighting fast. I'm impressed with their lever of customer support. In this day and age a lot of service provided seems to miss this important value but not them. They are genuinely there to help you succeed. 5* from The Administrative Office

Our experience with SoundCurve has been excellent since we switched over 2 years ago. If you are considering switching, I suggest going with SoundCurve. For these reasons:

1. Price: we saved over $100/mo when we switched over from Comcast. And we didn't have to buy anything since they provide the phones.
2. Easy set up process: Jenny is our rep and she was very nice and set everything up for us. Whenever we had a question or concern, she always answered the phone or email right away. There was no stress for us.
3. Service: we haven't had to wait on hold once, and every time we have needed something, they remembered us and delivered quickly. Night and day difference from Comcast's support.
4. Reviews: we researched several Business Phone Providers and noticed SoundCurve has the happiest customers.
5. Size: SoundCurve is on the medium size company which was concerning to us at first, but they've been more responsive and much easier to get help from than Comcast ever was. They go the extra mile to meet our needs.

Good old fashioned customer service from a team that cares. You can tell it's a small, dedicated, and professional crew that wants every customer, big and small, to have an excellent experience with their product and service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you repair my Mitel, Avaya, or Panasonic system?

We’ll be straight with you: no. We diagnose what failed and tell you what fixing it would take, but we don’t patch discontinued systems, because a repair on dying infrastructure costs about as much as replacing it and leaves the next failure in place. Most callers who ask for a repair end up choosing the replacement once they see both numbers.

What does replacement cost compared to a repair?

Plans run $14.99 to $29.99 per user per month with phones included on most plans and no setup fees. A single repair visit on a legacy PBX, when you can find someone to do it, often exceeds the first year’s difference.

Can we keep our phone numbers?

Yes. Porting is free in most cases, and a temporary number keeps your caller ID working during the transfer. Your numbers are always yours.

How fast can we be back up?

Phones arrive pre-programmed within about 2 days and work as soon as you plug them in. Number porting completes in as little as 3 days while your existing line keeps working.

My brand isn't listed. Can you still help?

Yes. If it’s an on-premises system with a dial tone problem, the math is usually the same regardless of the badge on the box. Call and we’ll walk through it.
